The Spanish Puente — La Guiri does Santander

Standard

So the Spanish ‘Puente’ (or as translated ‘bridge’) is basically a long holiday weekend that the Spanish have made long by taking a Monday off because the Public Holiday is on a Tuesday…in Madrid’s case the Puente de Mayo this year is gonna be a longer one cause not only is there a Public Holiday on Tuesday…buuuuuuut there’s also one on Wednesday too!!!!!

So you know what that means… 5 DAY LONG WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!

🙂

And on this wonderful Puente…although it’s rainy as all hell everywhere in Spain pretty much….I’m off to the North of Spain.

Look for the Red Dot....That's Where I Am.

This Guiri is going to visit another Guiri…my friend Mary from Philly originally who now lives with her boy in the coastal city of SANTANDER.

The Port

View of the city and the port...

The Palace at the top of a Hill.

The Sardinero Beach!!!!!

I’ve been here several times, and I really do love this place. A nice retreat away from Madrid’s madness!

So while I rest and relax, I’ll be sure to give you a full 411 (aka…slang in American English for ‘Information’) on Santander after the puente!

Happy Puente to all of those in Spain!!!!

(And to those of you NOT here….well, enjoy your normal weekend and don’t be jealous! ;-))

Love,

La Guiri

So 2 weeks back my foreign friends and I organized our 3rd anniversary Turkey Day festivities. So far, due to table space and the ever-important oven requirement, we’ve had it at either my house or Mary’s.

Since Mary and her man – Carlos moved up to Santander in the North of Spain on the coast of the Bay of Biscay we had decided to head up there this year for our delicious yearly extreme feeding. This way we’d be able to see her new place and get the hell out of Madrid for a day or two. It was totally worth it even when Inaki’s car broke down just about 10kms from Mary’s place. (Hahaha….it was like something that WOULD happen to me and my friends…sometimes I feel like I live in a movie.)

Mary ended up getting a 15 kilo (33 lbs) turkey since it was that or a really small one for our group of about 16 people. She had to get a saw to cut it in half and she had to cook it half and half since it didn’t all fit in the oven (Ha!).

Talk about crazy Thanksgiving experience….this definitely hit it right on the spot!

We had all the trimmings…

Turkey

Mashed Potatoes…and GRAVY!!!!

Green Bean Casserole

Stove Top Stuffing

Mary’s Homemade Mac-n-Cheese (Drooling as I think about it now!)

Cranberry Sauce

Sweet Potatoes….although I didn’t like the recipe I chose, gonna have to try another one for next year.

Roasted Autumn Veggies

And our international guests brought some typical Spanish dishes and also some Indian food…these came in handy later with our hangovers! 😉

And for dessert…..Polly’s Famous Chocolate Muffins and Brownies, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Crumble and Tiramisu.

Sooooo basically, everything was DELICIOUS!!!!!

I thought I’d share some of my pictures and some of the pictures my friend Alex took (I really need to get a good camera….haha).

Enjoy the pics!

We all had a blast, as always! Hope you don’t drool too much looking at these pics! 🙂
